Closing the temple to all but Jedi Knights, there he remained until a thousand years later, when a young Twi'lek Jedi who had lost her memory came to Kiffex to seek out the mystery of the temple there. There, she awakened Karkko and together began plans that would allow him to roam the galaxy once more. It was this information that took Tr'a Saa to the prison planet. As it turned out, the young Twi'lek Jedi was Aayla Secura, and her master, Quinlan Vos had lost his memory as well.

Having returned to the Jedi Order, Quinlan regained his memory somewhat, but Aayla was still left with questions and an intense anger towards Vos. Receiving the news that she had been located on Kiffex, Quinlan set out to find her and return her to the Jedi Order. However, it was unknown that that Karkko had awakened. With Quinlan Vos' history with the Anzati, one that could threaten to destroy all the work that was done in attempting to fix his memory, confronting the ancient Anzati master had the potential to turn Quinlan to the Dark Side.

Long after Quinlan had gone to Kiffex, a holocron in the Jedi Temple activated itself and revealed to the Jedi the presence of Karkko on Kiffex as well as the story behind his imprisonment. When the Jedi Council learned of this, they knew Quinlan's mission was in serious danger and tried to get word to him. However, they were unable to reach him and instead turned to Tr'a Saa. Contacting her with the information, they gave her the task of finding Quinlan and warning him. As Tr'a Saa entered the system, her ship was disabled by the Guardians from Kiffu, who patrolled the space lanes and served as guards for Kiffex. Managing to land her ship safely, although disabled, Tr'a Saa arrived on the planet just in time to rescue Quinlan from a pack of feral Anzati, led by Aayla Secura.

Apparently, Anzati had come to Kiffex over time in reverence of Karkko and he fed off of their essence and subsequently they had degenerated into wild, degenerate animal-like creatures. Led by Aayla Secura, she and the Anzati had been raiding prison compounds and hangouts. During one such raid, Quinlan Vos, as well as Jedi Knights Tholme, Quinlan's former master, and Zao, a blind Veknoid who felt the Force called him there, followed Aayla into the forests of Kiffex, along with the Devaronian scoundrel Vilmarh Grahrk who had made acquaintances with Quinlan.
